What Does Refurbished Mean? A Plain-English Buyer's Guide

5 MIN READ · UPDATED 2026-08-21

Refurbished is one of the most misunderstood words in resale. It does not mean broken, and it does not mean brand new. Here is exactly what it means, how grading works, and how to tell a good refurbished deal from a bad one.

The short answer

A refurbished item is a product that was returned, traded in, or pulled from a shelf, then inspected, cleaned, repaired if something was wrong, and re-tested before being offered for sale again. The goal of refurbishing is to bring the item back to full working order.

That is different from "used as-is," where an item is sold exactly how it arrived with no testing, and different from "open box," where the package was opened but the product itself was never really used.

Refurbished vs. open box vs. used

These three labels get mixed up constantly, and the difference is worth real money.

  • Open box — the box was opened, the item is essentially new, often a customer return within the return window. Usually the smallest discount.
  • Refurbished — the item was tested and, if needed, repaired. It works like it should, but it may show light cosmetic wear. Mid-range discount.
  • Used — the item was owned and used. Condition varies. Biggest discount, but you need honest photos and condition notes.

How condition grades usually work

Most resellers use some version of an A/B/C scale. Grades are not standardized across the industry, so always read the actual description instead of trusting the letter.

  • Grade A — looks close to new, minimal or no visible marks.
  • Grade B — fully functional with visible cosmetic wear such as light scratches or scuffs.
  • Grade C — heavier cosmetic wear, still tested and working. Best price if looks do not matter to you.

What to check before you buy refurbished

A trustworthy refurbished listing answers these questions before you have to ask them.

  • Are the photos of the actual item, not a stock image?
  • Does the description name specific flaws instead of saying "good condition"?
  • Is it clear what accessories, cables, or chargers are included?
  • Is there a return window if the item arrives not as described?
  • For electronics, was it powered on and function-tested?

When refurbished is the smart buy

Refurbished usually saves 20% to 60% versus new. It makes the most sense on items where function matters more than a flawless finish: power tools, kitchen appliances, TVs and monitors, audio gear, and everyday electronics. It makes less sense on items where cosmetic perfection is the point, like a gift where the packaging matters.

At Ace Re-Sell Shop every item is photographed as it actually looks and described flaws and all, so you know exactly what shows up at your door.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is refurbished the same as broken?

No. A refurbished item has been tested and restored to working order. If something was wrong, it was repaired before resale.

Do refurbished items come with a warranty?

It depends on the seller. Many resellers offer a short return window instead of a manufacturer warranty. Always check the return policy before buying.

How much cheaper is refurbished?

Typically 20% to 60% below new retail, depending on the category, the condition grade, and how in-demand the model is.

Is refurbished better than used?

Usually yes for reliability, because refurbished items are tested. Used items can still be a great deal when the seller provides honest photos and condition notes.
