Open Box vs. New: Is the Discount Actually Worth It?

4 MIN READ · UPDATED 2026-08-21

Open box is the closest thing to buying new at a used price, but the label covers a wide range of situations. Here is how to tell which open box deals are worth taking.

What open box actually means

An open box item is one whose packaging was opened, but the product itself saw little or no use. The most common causes are customer returns within the return window, floor and display models, and packages damaged in shipping while the contents stayed fine.

Typical discount range

Open box usually runs 10% to 30% off new. The discount grows when the original packaging is missing, when an accessory was not returned, or when the item was a display unit that saw handling.

The risks worth knowing

Two things go wrong most often with open box purchases, and both are easy to screen for.

  • Missing accessories — the original buyer kept a cable, remote or manual. Confirm the full contents list.
  • Unknown return reason — the item may have been returned because something was wrong with it. Buy from sellers who test returns before relisting.

When open box beats new

If you care about the product working and not about a sealed box, open box is almost always the better value. It is especially strong on large appliances, TVs, monitors, tools and furniture, where the discount in dollars is large and the cosmetic risk is small.

Skip open box when the item is a gift, when the sealed packaging is part of the value, or when the discount is under about 10% and does not justify the small extra uncertainty.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is open box the same as refurbished?

No. Open box means the package was opened but the item is essentially unused. Refurbished means the item was tested and, if needed, repaired before resale.

Do open box items work like new?

In most cases yes, especially when the seller tests returns before relisting. Check the condition notes and the return policy.

Why is open box cheaper?

Once packaging is opened an item can no longer be sold as new, so it is discounted even when it is in perfect working order.
