Refurbished vs. Used: What's the Difference?

4 MIN READ · UPDATED 2026-08-24

Refurbished and used are not the same thing, and mixing them up is how shoppers overpay or end up with a dud. Here is the difference in plain language, plus which one to choose by category.

The core difference

Refurbished means someone put hands on the item: it was inspected, cleaned, repaired if a part had failed, and re-tested before it went back up for sale. Used means the item was owned before and is being resold in the condition it arrived in, with its condition described rather than corrected.

Both can be excellent value. The difference is who absorbs the uncertainty — the seller on refurbished, the buyer on used.

Price, risk and what you give up

As a rule of thumb, refurbished lands between open box and used on price.

  • Refurbished — roughly 20% to 50% off new, tested to work, light cosmetic wear possible.
  • Used — often 40% to 70% off new, condition varies, needs honest photos and notes.
  • Used, untested or 'as-is' — cheapest, and only worth it if you can repair or you only need parts.

Which to buy by category

Anything with a battery, motor or screen benefits most from refurbishing. Anything simple and mechanical is usually fine used.

  • Buy refurbished — laptops, tablets, phones, power tools, vacuums, kitchen appliances.
  • Buy used — hand tools, cast iron, furniture, glassware, collectibles, clothing, books and media.
  • Either is fine — speakers, monitors, lawn and garden gear, as long as it is tested.

How we handle it at Ace Re-Sell Shop

Every item we list is hand-checked before it goes online, and the listing says exactly what condition it is in with real photos of the actual item. Anything powered gets plugged in and tested. If something is scuffed, missing an accessory, or sold as-is, the listing says so rather than burying it.

Orders ship nationwide and are covered by our 14-day return policy, so a used or refurbished purchase does not have to be a gamble.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is refurbished better than used?

Refurbished is lower risk because the item was tested and repaired if needed. Used is cheaper. For electronics and anything with a motor or battery, refurbished is usually the better buy.

Does refurbished mean the item was broken?

Not necessarily. Most refurbished items were customer returns or trade-ins that worked fine. Refurbishing just confirms that before resale.

Can I return a used item?

At Ace Re-Sell Shop, yes — used and refurbished purchases are covered by our 14-day return policy as long as the item comes back in the condition it shipped in.
